Botulinum toxin is a very safe and effective treatment to relax muscles of facial expression and lines associated with them.

Botulinum toxin can also change the skin, decrease muscle mass due to less activity and help shape the brow.

The procedure takes approximately five to ten minutes. The treatment is temporary and lasts anywhere between 2 to 6 months.

Questions

What are the indications for botox injections?

1.Dynamic Wrinkle treatment

Injecting the toxin is a non-surgical procedure that temporarily blocks the nerve impulse to the muscle, thereby relaxing the muscles that are responsible for facial wrinkles. A very small dose of the toxin is injected into the muscle.

This softens and, in some cases, virtually flattens the wrinkle. It is particularly effective for the upper portion of the face, such as frown lines, crows feet, or horizontal forehead lines.

2.Non-surgical Jaw Reduction

We often have patients who complain about heaviness to their lower face due to enlargement and squaring of the angle of the jaw. With time, some people develop an enlargement of their masseter muscle. This is the main muscle responsible for chewing. Either through genetic predisposition to enlargement or through continuous exercise via teeth grinding and clenching, or both, the muscle gets bigger.

Frequently patients grind or clench their teeth during the night and are often not aware of it (bruxism). Enlargement of the master muscle is one sign that this is happening. Dentists will note wearing of the teeth that is typical of grinding or clenching. Some patients note morning tenderness and fatigue around their jaw area.

Softening the angular appearance of that strong jaw gives a more oval and gentle shape to their face.

Botulinum toxin injections have been shown to be a safe and effective way to reduce the size of the masseter muscles. Two weeks following the first treatment, we monitor the results and adds more toxin to the area if needed. The jaw reduction treatment does not result in weakness of the bite or chewing. The effects can be relatively quick, however it may take up to a month before the visible shrinking of the muscle can be observed.

The procedure is fast, relatively painless, and requires no anesthesia or downtime. Ice is used to numb the area for a short period prior to injecting Botox.

3.Sweating/Hyperhidrosis

Botulinum toxin type-A is a very effective treatment that can be injected into the skin to treat too much sweating under the arms, on the hands or under the feet.

4.Medical indications

Botulinum toxin can be injected sometimes for medical reasons, as for example for facial symmetrical after facial paralysis, for certain migraines, Frey syndrome after parotidectomy, for certain vocal cord or swallowing disorders, for hypersalivation and for other conditions.

These indications are discussed on a case-by-case basis.
